Salter #1038 11 Pound Round Glass Kitchen Scale with Extras Review
Salter #1038 11 Pound Round Glass Kitchen Scale with Extras
The Salter 11 Pound Round Glass Kitchen Scale is great for measurements while cooking and also to help you with portion control. It has the popular add and weigh feature and weighs in increments of .1oz/1 gram. The scale itself weights up to 11 lb/ 5 kg.
The Salter 11 Pound Round Glass Kitchen Scale features a large backlit .8” readout. It is easily visible, even when large containers are placed on top of the scale. The scale part itself is made out of a durable silver plastic material. The round glass weighing platform is stain and flavor resistant.
This salter scale has many other nifty features. It has a handy kitchen timer so you’ll always know when your dishes are done cooking. It also features a temperature gauge on the display panel.
The only complaints we’ve been able to find on this salter scale is the fact that you can’t weigh anything less than a gram with much accuracy. This makes the measuring of spices pretty much near impossible. There is also no option to change between fractions and decimals, so if you’re not sure how to make the conversion in your head then you best have a calculator handy. This salter scale has been said to have a short shelf life, somewhere around a year. Luckily, it comes with a 10 year warranty, so if you happen to be one the unlucky people that it breaks on, you can easily get a free replacement.
Additional features include:
- 4 different buttons
- Bright blue backlight
- Easy to change between ounces and grams
- Easy to clean

For the money, this is a pretty good scale. On the good side the display is nicely backlit so it’s clearly visible even when a large bowl is placed on top of the scale and casting a shadow. It easily zero’s out so you can weigh as you go in recipes. It easily switches units from metric to English. It’s fairly accurate for most uses.
The negative? Well there are a few. For one, the scale resolution isn’t too precise. It only measures in 1 gram increments, so you can’t weigh anything that weighs less than 1 gram, or where fractions of a gram are important. The scale might read 1 gram, but it could be anywhere between .5 and 1.4 grams. See what I mean? This makes small amounts of things like spices impossible to measure. If a recipe calls for .5 grams of saffron or yeast, you’re screwed. There’s also no feature for toggling between decimals and fractions. Example: you need 1 1/3 pounds of potatoes, but to measure that on this scale you have to know that is equal to 1.33 pounds. It’s no huge deal for anyone even with a working knowledge of how to convert a fraction to a decimal, but it would be more convenient to not have an added layer of thought when making a recipe for the first time.
There is at least one better scale made by Salter, but it’s more expensive. There are also good scales made by the company My Weigh. It’s probably worth it if you only want to buy one scale and want a good one. But, for most people this scale will be fine for cooking purposes and weight management and other such tasks.

This scale was great while it worked, which was about 12 months. Suddenly one day when I turned it on the display continued to show zeros then it turned off. I can’t find any information from the manufacturer about a warrantee or replacement info. Bummer

I purchased this scale, not for cooking purposes, but actually for knitting. I use it to evenly divide up balls of yarn, to calculate yardage-weight ratios for yarns so I can substitute materials, and to calculate remaining yardage.
This scale has been very valuable to me. I chose it because it has a 1 gram sensitivity, which is key for yarn, as it is so light. I am able to accurately divide a hank for making socks and have been able to calculate how much yardage remains so I know if I can get a few more rows in or if I should wrap it up. It’s also allowed me to make more educated material substitutions.
The scale itself is silver plastic and has a glass plate. For whatever reason, it did surprise me that the silver part was plastic, but it seems to be sturdy enough. I do not know if the plastic area is waterproof or water resistant and do not intend to find out through first hand experience. I do find that where I place my ball of yarn on the glass platform can change the measurement I get, but only by a gram or so. I assume that is probably pretty standard across these relatively less expensive kitchen scales. It also converts to oz, which I’ve used on occasion with certain hanks of yarn. The scale has a temperature reading on it, which does nothing but amuse me. The display is easy to read and is back lit. The scale also contains a timer and you also have the ability to put a bowl or other vessel on the scale and re-set it to zero. This model has four separate buttons and I mention that b/c other reviews for different scales had been annoyed by a one button set up that caused them to lose data.
Again, my uses of this product have been strictly for knitting, to which end it works really well. If I were that type of cook, I would most likely purchase another scale just like this one for kitchen use.

Echoing all that was said in other reviews, I really liked this scale. But, after regular, careful use at home, the scale’s display suddenly went blank and nothing would revive it. I thought it would last longer than just 6 months. Now I have to figure out how to get warranty repair.

Not bad value for the price. Like the bright blue backlight – easy to read. Easy to change b/w oz and g. Tare feature is excellent. Fairly accurate. I am just using it for portion control in the foods I prepare not for chemical preparations or anything!!
Best I have found in this price range.
